Edition for violin and piano, score and violin part.
Johann
Baptist (Jan Křtitel) Vaňhal (1739-1813) was born in Nové Nechanice,
Bohemia, but spent most of his adult life, from 1760 until his death, in
Vienna. An accomplished organist, violinist, and cellist, Vaňhal earned
his living in Vienna as a free-lance composer and teacher. He was well
respected by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf with whom he studied, and by
Haydn and Mozart, both of whom performed his music in public. Among
Vaňhal’s pupils was Ignaz Pleyel.
The three sonatas Op. 30 for piano
with violin obbligato were first published by the Bureau of Arts and
Industry (Vienna and Pest) in March, 1808. The title page reads as
follows: »TROIS SONATES / pour / Pianoforte et Violon obligé / Composées
et Dédiées / à / MADAME DE PRESTINARI / par /J. Wanhal / À Vienne et
Pesth au bureau des arts et industrie«. The three sonatas Op. 30 are
charming, representative works of moderate technical difficulty from the
late Viennese Classical Period. They both recall the early keyboard
writing of Muzio Clementi and prefigure the textures and melodic
qualities of Franz Schubert’s three violin Sonatinas Op. 137. All three
sonatas begin with first movement sonata allegros, follow with slow
melodic ABA forms and conclude with rondos. Although originally titled
»piano sonatas with violin obbligato«, melodic material is shared more
or less equally between the two instruments.
